Questions about your online shopping habits
  • I work in the ecommerce space and wanted to know your experiences with shopping online. Feel free to write anything but here are some questions you could respond to. Please exclude travel purchases from your answers as that is a distinct and more mature subcategory.

    a) How do you decide whether you are going to buy an item online or offline?

    b) What motivates your online shopping? Do you have a specific product in mind first or do you have a favorite online store that you tend to browse and then buy from when you see something interesting.

    c) Let's say you need to buy a certain specific Canon camera. How will you decide what online shop to buy it from? If you research prices first, how (specifically) do you do your research (please give more detail than just saying "I use google")

    d) Do you use any shopping aides (like price comparison sites, deal sites, coupon sites, cashback sites, etc). Which ones specifically?
  • My 2c

    a) dunno, really. Sometimes it stays in the head a while and the purchase can happen when decision and opportunity intersect - could be anywhere.

    b) when the decision has already been taken, and there's a known, reliable place and one can order "conveniently" - read from office/in the course of one's usual life.

    c) a quick check on some common online stores I know about. Will look around at others too, but probably not want to get into shipping/payment/reliability hassles with unknown brands. Will also call one/two brick and mortar guys for a comparo for high value stuff.

    d) Google spreadsheet, to take notes in one place :) And Twitter, to get some feedback.
  • Great set of qns. Here are my personal observations:
    a) my primary motive is 'discounted price' or 'comfort' - i.e. I am more than happy to buy grocery online, but I am not sure if I really want to pay that extra delivery fee.
    b) I start off with a specific concept (like 'toys with wheels' for my niece).
    c) I guess its a lot about brand recall. I end up shopping of sites which are prominent in their category. For ex, I am seeing a lot of yebhi.com ads selling shoes (that's how they started), so if I have to buy shoes/slippers, I will buy from them. But not, electronics products. Maybe, I am part of this industry and hence this 'mental' bias.
    d) Naah..most of cashback sites are spammy in nature. I do look at deal sites - but guess what, deal sites do not have a search box - so they are mostly irrelevant when I have a specific product in mind.

    Hope this helps.
  • Here are my opinions:

    a. As long as it's not apparel or furniture, I wouldn't mind buying online.
    b. Find products in the news that are interesting. Run into them at stores when I am out. Check for prices of that product online.
    c. Buy online if price is cheaper, shipping is handled well and after sale support from the website is good.
    d. Not really.
  • a & b) I would say it is part choice, part peer pressure.
    c) I buy books from Flipkart; there are some sites giving better discounts these days but Flipkart's customer service and delivery standards are just not met by other services. I have never bought anything too expensive online like a camera or anything though.
    d) For phones I have used gsmarena in the past. They have a 1-on-1 comparison feature which is useful
  • Thanks to all who answered. It's helpful.
  • I am from chandigarh and I find that "all" of the high value items are cheaper in brick and mortar stores besides that sometimes I want to hold the product and get a feel for it before i buy. You cant really buy a camera without holding it in your hand. The same is true for mobile phones.

The real reason why i shop offline for high value items:
    * No worries about shipping damages.
    * Instant gratification :)
    * Since the prices are actually less in retail store by atleast a margin of 1k and sometimes by as much as 2.5 why should i shop online ? This could be because of less taxation by UT government. Chandigarh does have the cheapest liquor and petrol in India !

The only physical thing that i do buy online are books.
  • a)
I do my research online and then compare prices
of online stores to physical retail stores (considering shipping charges). I decide
based on evaluating the ‘savings’ against the comfort/speed of purchase.

    b)
When I identify a need for a product (or
category), I do my research online to narrow down to the ‘select few’ items.
     I don’t browse online without a need for a
    product.

    c)
I research the respectable and well known sites
for reviews/prices and buy from them.

    d)
I use niche price comparison sites especially if
they provide a lot of content about the products that are being compared.

Since you used the ‘camera’ example, I would like to bring
up my IndCara.com, helping Indian consumers choose the right camera.
Please visit and give feedback on my first attempt.

  • @HemanPatel, thanks that's helpful
  • Hi,

I guess I should thank you for putting up this post.

Well, firstly I am a strong believer and follower of ROPO (Research Online Purchase Offline). Nothing beats the shopping experience. But it is always good to have a clear cut idea of what a brand has to offer. There is so much information out there on the World Wide Web, but it is so very scattered. A million classified sites, a truckload of deal sites, numerous review sites, and worst of all are out dated brand sites.

We at InoVVorX have tried to solve all these problems and more, through our product Doondoo. (http://doondoo.com/ ) . It is  set to launch on Feb 1st, 2012. I would love to get reviews on this product. Feedback would be of great help. I shall be putting it up shortly at the Pre launch Feedback section. Maybe this is like the teaser to that.
  • a)  Well , there are two factors

        1. Price - If we get a good deal online will go for it sure

        2. convenience - Sometimes online prices will be less than the offline market price but still if I get the product in hand when I think of buying it. I will choose offline shopping.

    b) I have some favorite online stores. Most of the times the value for money offers tend me to buy that item. If I need a specific item I will check the price and service of all online shops and then will go for one.

    c) Since camera is not a very very urgent thing to have I am ready to wait for some days for it to be delivered. I will go for the best discounted deal.

    d) I never used any of this

  • Hi
    sameerparwani ,

Anything i buy online depends on my mood. I think, flipkart is the only website which i have made maximum use of. Almost 200+ books is the recent count that i have purchased using Flipkart's Home delivery syste.

Indiatimes shopping was another website i used until 2008. But stopped after that. Then, just once or twice i've also used Infibeam to shop for books.

PRICE and Discounts are the major factors due to which i prefer to buy books online.  And i have never used a shopping COUPON till now even though freecharge sent me loads of them. :P

Well, that's about my opinion.! :)

I generally like buying books online. But i don't seem to trust online stores with my clothing and other stuffs.
  • I feel addicted with shopping like on web. Actually it's so easy and convenient way to purchase all needed thing without paying enough and that's without wondering for the need thing on market store or outlets.
  • I like to do online shopping. It is easy to do get verity and sometimes we also get the free coupons for shopping. But if you are shopping as a habit then it is not bad but be sure that it will not become a addiction. Shopping addiction is not very common in the people who like to do online shopping.
  • a) Depends on the product. Groceries and Apparel - offline. Books, Electronics - online.

    b) Pricing and availability is what motivates me to buy online. I wanted a particular phone and I could not find it anywhere offline plus I got the best price online.

    c) Price comes first - I use comparison sites like MySmartPrice, IndiaBookStore.net etc. Reputation of the online store comes next. I'd prefer to buy from a FlipKart, eBay or IndiaPlaza than some site whose name I have never heard of even if it is cheaper.

    d) Yes I use price comparison sites and coupon sites like RetailMeNot.
  • Online shopping is great but it depends on individual to individuals that he wants to buy a certain product via online or physical, online shopping gives us great discount through online deals and coupons present, so online shopping is good for those people who don't have a phobia of getting cheated on web.
  • 1.Convenience in shopping.
2.Customer satisfaction with better price comparison option.
3.I search like best canon deals with location name.
    4.I use compare products prices.
  • I would never buy any apparel, furniture or any expensive item online.I mainly purchase gadgets online and always look on for deals to get the best price.
  • 1) From the price i decide whether to go for online or offline?
    2) No such product in mind, but generally and mostly i like to buy watches and free size products online from any online store which is providing good discounts.
    3) suppose if i want to buy any product then i simply compare price manually from well known online stores and read reviews given by other customers.
    4) I sometimes use deal and coupon code sites.
  • online shopping is best option for shopping than direct shopping because online shopping save money as well as time.

One of the best and growing Coupons site http://www.dealsbooth.in/

  • Online shopping offers the opportunity to shop from home without any travelling with many good offers on products.
There are some great discounted products with many options, we can also compare other websites for same products from one place and buy the best offering product.
Normally I prefer buying clothes, accessories and bags online.

I have bought some great products from http://www.shop.inonit.in
  • a) How do you decide whether you are going to buy an item online or offline?
    1. convinience, sitting in front of laptop and jst click away
    2. Many times I try researching products online, before buying - if I like the description and feel good about the site, their presentation i usually click add to cart.
3.Availability of a few brands/products which are not readily found in retail stores.

    b) What motivates your online shopping? Do you have a specific product in mind first or do you have a favorite online store that you tend to browse and then buy from when you see something interesting.
1.If i need a product I browse, research abt it, its pricing/sale comparing websites. if pricing is not much of difference I go back to my fav sites and buy it.

    c) Let's say you need to buy a certain specific Canon camera. How will you decide what online shop to buy it from? If you research prices first, how (specifically) do you do your research (please give more detail than just saying "I use google")
    1. Amazon.com for reviews
    2. Junglee.com for price comparision
    3. Call Customer service ask about delivery time.

    d) Do you use any shopping aides (like price comparison sites, deal sites, coupon sites, cashback sites, etc). Which ones specifically?
    Only Junglee.com for price comparision
